If there is such a thing as a "Hollywood formula", for making movies,
Then Moonrise Kingdom would be the antithesis of this.
Set on an 'imaginary' island off the coast of New England in 1965, the movie
Tells the story of two twelve-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact, and
Run away together into the wilderness. As the various authorities try to hunt them down,
A violent storm is brewing offshore, and the peaceful island community is turned upside down
In more ways than anyone can handle. I did not find the plot to be logical, yet that turned out to
Be the main draw to the movie. Moonrise Kingdom reminded me of the way we saw the world when
We were children, where the smallest things mattered the most. Like how the world is simplified into
A linear adventure with a loved one, and with prized possessions, and a special power,
And everything else faded into the background, which was what this movie did, to zoom
Right into the storytelling, and leaving the realities of the world behind. I never really liked
Incoherent movies, but Moonrise Kingdom left me smiling as the credits rolled.
If you like a magical movie, and in particular enjoyed The Fantastic Mr Fox,
Then this will be a movie you will enjoy too.
Bring your binoculars!
