:: Spreading the Cheer This Evening ::

What is this world, if full of care

We have no time to stand and stare?

I’m never a strong advocate of charity.

I dislike the fact how charity fulfills one’s certain need for

Self-fulfillment. Though not always necessarily perfectly true,

Doesn’t one donate for the need to feel charitable, or to feel good?

Don’t get me wrong. Of course we would want to do our part

To raise some funds for a needy cause, but is this act intrinsically

A gift of compassion, or the need to fuel the ego?

I guess the answer is a mix of both.

As a human being, it is perhaps an innate need and a moral value of ours

To want to contribute to the betterment of society, and of mankind.

That includes the animals too, so let’s not forget them!

Ego or otherwise, as long as we can play a part

For a better tomorrow, let’s do it. =)

(from Mr PinMing)

Hi all!!
We're slightly more than 24 hours away to the SPCA's charity drive.
Us 5Degrees have just collected a huge box of merchandise
consisting of calendars, note pads, tee's, greeting cards, car window
stickers, etc, all up for sale for this evening’s Powerful Pasar Malam at
Play, beginning 8pm
. However, merchandise alone isn't enough!!
I've heard that some of our members will be bringing really cute
collectibles (amidst some useful stuffs lol), CD's, magazines (clean ones!),
tee's, polo's, etc, etc. So, do come on down! It'll be pretty interesting
and I'm sure you'll be able to get something you need want (there're
only a few basic needs, the rest are all wants. My professor told me so!!).

Hmm, I disagree with you on many levels here.

The culprit here isn't charity, but big egos. Besides, whatever the motives, the benefit still passes on, and some sense of good is done. This is more than what we can say for cam-whoring and constant profile pic changes. Ego is at work, too, but what good does it actually do? So, am I correct to understand here that you have a "problem" with charity but you do not with the other bids on ego boosts? That, to me, is little amusing.

The culprit is never charity but our egos, and a desire to analyze, and to think about the process of doing a charitable cause, and not just doing it, methinks, is a good exercise. It is upon reaching some kind of an internal understanding that ones goes forth to do something for charity, that brings out the best in ones actions.

This has nothing to do with ego boosts such as camwhoring or profile pictures. Those are merely actions and may not require a thought process of the former since they are end-results by themselves and not for another reason or purpose, to an external benefit.

As long as you find it amusing, I am happy it has given you some entertainment, and I hope that you'll always be the entertained, and not the entertainer.

i think the debate belongs to the war bettween being EGOISTIC and ALTRUISTIC.

"I dislike the fact how charity fulfills one’s certain need for self-fulfillment."

self-fulfilment is hardly quantifiable, so i dont think thats necessarily a fact.

while its true that there are people that i know who contributes to charity to "feel good" about themselves (egoistic), there are also a "few good" people who truly believe their share can help the less fortunate.

at the end of the day, charity is to remember there are people who have lesser than you and to help them remember they dont.

if helping people means seeing them happy and content, and if seeing them happy and content in turn makes you happy and content, and this 'making yourself happy and content' is self-fulfilment, then this "selfish" act must be good.

in other words, if you are not 'happy', then there's nothing you can share with anyone else anyway.
