:: Pandora's Box ::

In Greek mythology, Pandora was the first woman on earth. Zeus ordered Hephaestus, the god of craftsmanship, to create her and he did, using water and earth. The gods endowed her with many talents; Aphrodite gave her beauty, Apollo music, Hermes persuasion, and so forth. Hence her name: Pandora, "all-gifted".

When Prometheus stole fire from heaven, Zeus took vengeance by presenting Pandora to Epimetheus, Prometheus' brother. With her, Pandora had a box which she was not to open under any circumstance. Impelled by her natural curiosity, Pandora opened the box, and all evil contained escaped and spread over the earth. She hastened to close the lid, but the whole contents of the box had escaped, except for one thing which lay at the bottom, and that was Hope.

" Hope rules a land for ever green:
All powers that serve the bright-eyed Queen
Are confident and gay;
Clouds at her bidding disappear;
Points she to aught ? - the bliss draws near,
And Fancy smooths the way."

pandora was probably thinking, "where the fuck is the diamond ring?"

hope is the first footstep of the meek, and prayer the last refuge of a coward.

personally, i think hoping for anything is just asking to be disappointed. just let things be and you'll be content regardless of the outcome.

i guess tat's why Hope was in the box at any rate...
its the best and the worst.

Talk about gifts... heh
i always thought the Ancient Greeks had a highly refined sense of ironic humour...

The only thing the gods did not give her was a BRAIN!

i like this post leh.

An instructive and ironic legend. Why would God give her an evil-filled box when god is portrayed to be all-good and benevolent? And worse, we mortals suffer the repercussions of gods' punishment.

Go read Greek mythology... The gods there were far from all-good and benevolent... They were more jealous and sex-crazed! :~

Ironic as it's contrary to a Platonist view of God as essentially good. Greek gods were much modelled towards humans, each signifying a human aspect such as beauty, evil, narcissism etc. Still, greek mythology is a great fascinating read.

Oh, mythology is always fascinating to read, Norse, Greek, Egyptian, Maya, or even Chinese or Indian... Loads of cultural perspectives... :)

Let me guess; you're a fan of Age of Mythology.

Huh? Simi si Age of Mythology?

i guess it's the title of a computer game...

Yah! I did a web-search, and found that it is a Microsoft game... >_

I've read the story before too, but it disturbs me to read in this version that Hope was at the bottom of the box when she closed the lid. Does this mean it didn't get out? :P
