It's life's illusions I recall......

I believe in what you just said. However, i wouldn't call reminiscing useless: it is time-consuming, yes, but it serves a purpose. Thinking of what could have been and what might have been if we did something different gives us a healthy solution to problems we encounter as we trek along this path that we call life. We, thus, charge it to experience. Right or wrong, good or bad, all decisions we've made make us who we are and those that we will make two days from now will be what we will be in the morrow. It's far better to have done something wrong today than to have done nothing at all. That is why we exist: to choose our way. Back in my country, we have a saying that roughly goes, "Whoever does not look back will never get to where he's going." It is important that we remember. But stop there, we should not. Remembering is only half the battle. To use these memories is as important.

Pragmatism has its merits, but it also has its pitfalls. Be stoic all your life. Never feel again. These are what pragmatics become prone to. I don't think any human would want that for himself. I know I wouldn't...

Agreed..a healthy balance of both is in order which was what i was alluding to by my phrase "useless reminiscing" Speaking as someone who constantly dwells incessantly in the past, over-analyzing issues and events, i can vouch that it's a hard habit to break.

Personally though, while good to have some idea of a direction in life, someone once told me, stop looking forward and backward all the time and just look around you and be. I'm guessing the metaphor is simply keep on moving in life and take each step as it comes. Hard on the ears and hard to practise, but it does tend to simplify life or at least make the journey both easier and more interesting.

Agreed. .(=
