:: both sides now ::

It has been a while since I bought a CD.
Just monday, while I was rummaging through the discs in another CD shop, Corrine May's 'Fly Away' played.
Immediately moved, I bought the last piece of their 'Best Audiophile Voices II' CD.
Listened to the song while driving to work, I teared.
I teared again. The last one's 'Come What May'
Couldn't find the lyrics to that touching song, though.

Finally recognised the other song that touched me.
Apropos.

Both Sides Now

Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere, i've looked at cloud that way.
But now they only block the sun, they rain and snow on everyone.
So many things i would have done but clouds got in my way.

I've looked at clouds from both sides now,
From up and down, and still somehow
It's cloud illusions i recall.
I really don't know clouds at all.

Moons and junes and ferris wheels, the dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real; i've looked at love that way.
But now it's just another show. you leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know, don't give yourself away.

I've looked at love from both sides now,
From give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions i recall.
I really don't know love at all.

Tears and fears and feeling proud to say "i love you" right out loud,
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds, i've looked at life that way.
But now old friends are acting strange, they shake their heads, they say
I've changed.
Something's lost but something's gained in living every day.

I've looked at life from both sides now,
From win and lose, and still somehow
It's life's illusions i recall.
I really don't know life at all.

I loved the way this song was used in Love Actually... One of the most genuinely touching moments in the film...

Yeah, gf was tearing. Hmm, that's a new version though right?

Tears and fears and feeling proud to say "i love you" right out loud,
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds, i've looked at life that way.
But now old friends are acting strange, they shake their heads, they say
I've changed.
Something's lost but something's gained in living every day.

Fly Away

(Anonymous)
"When will you be home?" she asks
As we watch the planes take off
We both know we have no clear answer to where my dreams may lead
She's watched me as i crawled and stumbled
As a child, she was my world
And now to let me go, I know she bleeds
and yet she says to me

You can fly so high
Keep your gaze upon the sky
I'll be praying every step along the way
Even though it breaks my heart to know we'll be so far apart
I love you too much to make you stay
Baby fly away

Autumn leaves fell into spring time and
SIlver-painted hair
Daddy called one evening saying
"We need you. Please come back"
When I saw her laying in her bed
Fragile as a child
Pale just like an angel taking flight
I held her as I cried

You can fly so high
Keep your gaze upon the sky
I'll be praying every step along the way
Even though it breaks my heart to know we'll be so far apart
I love you too much to make you stay
Baby fly away

Thanks, whoever you are.
"I've always depended on the kindness of strangers."

i thought joni mitchell's voice brought out the sadness of the song even more

I agree with you too! The Joni Mitchell's version is enough to reduce me to tears =)

Glam Punk *hugs* Sporty Punk!

oei! u r suppose to be finishin up yr werk n not surfin n chattin!

When i 1st heard her fly away album during my vocal lesson i went to search for the album the next day...

There is this song other than fly away abt 2 person looking on the same side of the moon et they are so far away frm each other..that song really touched me too..:)

the song is called same side of the moon
my fave song off the album!!

You can try the whole album

I'd recommend the whole Corrine May album.
Mr Beasley
Walk away
Are my favourite.
but really all the other songs are great too.

Take care dude.

Corrinne May is damn good for a local talent.

I have that CD too! As well as Corrine May's 'Fly Away' album. Someone special gave them to me :) 'Fly Away' sounds better on the audiophiles CD somehow. Perhaps the mastering was better or something.

If you like both sides now, try to get the new Joni Mitchell recording. It's quite fascinating to hear how her interpretation of the song has changed over the years. I didn't really like the version on the audiophiles CD. Somehow feel that the singer lacks a connection to the song. Or, to do a Simon, 'It was just pleasant.' Diana Reeves did a nice version of the song on the 'Pink Champagne' CD.

Perhaps I should go listen to Joni Mitchell's album then.
Lovely poignant lyrics, Fly Away.

Have all the above songs too... quite recently in fact. keke. my friend morit featured Fly Away on his blog a short while back and got me hooked. Joni mitchell's latest version of Both Sides Now is, i believe, the most heart wrenching song i've heard.

You're talking bout Moulin Rouge's Come What May?

Latest version? Must go take a listen. I like the way the lyrics ran along... idealistic realist? Is there such a thingee?

Yups, I was referring to the Moulin Rouge's live version of Come What May.... there was a gasp, cos Satin was supposed singing it with her dying breath.

Oh well.

This is an example of lyrics that could sculpt the mood of the song. You could read it or sing it and the song would still that impressive and imaginative.

It is one of my fave, no matter how you sing it.

Another one that came to mind is Love, Me by Collin Raye.

There's also a really sad one about the sucide of a young loving couple. It's called "I Love You", by the late Yutaka Ozaki. (who commited sucide as well).

*pat pat*

vince

Joni Mitchell wrote the original which was released in 1969. Since then, some 40 over artistes have done cover versions of that same song, including people like Sinatra, Clannad & Paul Young, Andy Williams, Stan Getz, Bing Crosby, Dizzy Gillespie and Judy Collins.

R.

I see.

When are you leaving?

Your dreamy sides seem so perplexed about life....
I guess the "perfect wholesome" wanting kinda wears down eventually....
Contentment is the key i supposed....
Sad Life....
